Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo has apologized for knocking a mobile phone out of an Everton fan’s hand as he walked down the tunnel at full-time following his team’s 1-0 defeat on Saturday.
Ronaldo appeared to be injured at full time and he seemed to take his anger out on a supporter’s phone at Goodison Park. Footage emerged of the 37-year-old legendary footballer knocking out a mobile phone.
Man Utd confirmed that the club being aware of the matter. A club spokesperson issued a statement, "We are aware of an alleged incident after today’s game at Everton and the club will cooperate with any police inquiries."
Ronaldo also posted a statement on his personal Instagram handle on Saturday, issuing an apology for his outburst. He also invited the fan involved in the incident to watch a game at Old Trafford, "It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing," he wrote on Instagram. "Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game. I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship."
Ronaldo played in Man Utd’s starting line-up and performed in the full 90 minutes of the defeat. The Red Devils are now six points from Tottenham, who successfully improved their chances of finishing fourth in the Premier League by defeating Aston Villa.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner had already limped off the pitch following the final whistle, with cuts on his legs. He seemed to be in deep pain as he entered the tunnel heading to the dressing room when the altercation with a supporter happened. Ronaldo was carrying a shin pad in his left hand due to a gash on his left leg.
Ronaldo and his Man Utd teammates were being booed and jeered as the incident occurred. Several police officers were seen watching nearby and did not intervene at the time.
