Though Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid are both off to solid starts this season -- with CR7 even being tabbed as a nominee for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award recently -- multiple reports indicate that the Real and Portugal star could be facing a penalty after allegedly firing verbal insensitivities toward a referee in the recent El Clasico match against Barcelona. Real fell 2-1 to their heated rivals and even though the contest was tight throughout, many members of Los Blancos, including Ronaldo, were not happy with the way the match was officiated.
According to Bleacher Report, Spanish TV station Cuatro captured Ronaldo insulting an official by calling him a 'piece of s**t' during Real's loss to Barcelona. Additional video is also allegedly available showing Ronaldo shouting at a game official because a penalty was not called when Real was trailing the match 1-0. Ronaldo was upset that a card was not drawn since he thought he was fouled by Barca's Javier Mascherano. Hoping to downplay the controversy surrounding one of the world's top players, Barcelona's Andres Iniesta noted that his side played well in the match and did a solid job to hold off an extremely talented Madrid side.
"We were up against Real Madrid and I don't think we should drive ourselves crazy just because they created a few chances," the Barca midfielder said. "They were losing and that means you're not afraid to go forward. In the end we took advantage with the second goal. Anything can happen when FC Barcelona and Real Madrid meet because they're both great teams with great players. But in the end it was a question of us being better than them."
If the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) -- the governing body of football in Spain -- decides to penalize the 28-year-old superstar, Ronaldo could face a ban of up to three matches, something that could very well hinder the overall performance of his La Liga squad.
Real currently sits third in the Spanish La Liga, behind first place Barcelona and second place Atletico Madrid.
