A couple has been reported dead in an apparent double-suicide after the two reportedly fell into a deep depression following their 14-year-old son's untimely death due to dengue fever in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India on Monday, Feb. 21.
The married duo, identified as 36-year-old V Sathyaraj, who works as an operator of a computer numerical control (CNC) lathe machine, and his wife S Saranya, also 36, have allegedly been distraught since their 14-year-old son Shyam died due to dengue in late December 2021, India Today reported.
On Monday morning, Feb. 21, when the husband didn't report to his workplace and the couple seemingly locked themselves inside their house, concerned neighbors began knocking on their door. However, when there was no response, the locals decided to break into the home. After they broke open the door, they found Sathyaraj hanging limp from the ceiling and Saranya lying dead on the floor.
Following this, the neighbors alerted the police about the incident and a team of Sulur officers responded to the scene. Sulur authorities then sent the bodies for an autopsy to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, the Hindu reported.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the couple were Mysore natives and had settled in Sulur some 15 years ago. Following the incident, the police officers have filed a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
In a similar but unrelated incident, an 18-year-old boy reportedly killed himself after his parents refused to gift him a phone on his birthday in Jaipur, India on Wednesday, Feb. 16, Latin Times reported.
The deceased teen, identified as Aaditya Kumar, 18, celebrated his birthday on Feb. 13. Five days before his birthday, Kumar demanded a mobile phone as a gift from his parents. However, Kumar's father, Vijay Singh, reportedly refused and promised to buy him a new cell phone only after he passes his 12th-grade examinations with a decent score.
On late Wednesday night, Feb. 16, after noticing that the light in Kumar's room was still on, the father went to check on the boy and found him hanging limp from a ceiling fan.
After discovering their unresponsive son, the parents rushed the boy to SMS hospital for treatment. However, the doctors at the facility declared him dead upon arrival.
The police revealed that Kumar was reportedly a gamer and PUBG addict. PUBG, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, is a mobile game that is quite popular among youngsters all over the world.
According to police officials, on Wednesday, Feb. 16, even though his father assured him he'd buy a phone for him, Kumar reportedly went to his room to sleep after having dinner and hung himself from the fan at midnight.
