The Pediatric Intensive Care Society alerted doctors in Britain due to the rising number of cases involving children having a rare inflammatory condition. The group stated that this is a serious illness that may have a link to COVID-19 but little is known about it as of the moment.
According to CNN, the condition is emerging in children and they are showing symptoms that include cardiac inflammation, abdominal pain, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Kids with this still unidentified syndrome end up with multi-system inflammatory and usually require intensive care as the symptoms could lead to shock, heart problems and low blood pressure within hours.
This is why it is crucial for doctors to recognize these symptoms so that the patients could be referred to a hospital quickly.
In the letter that warns general practitioners in London, the experts in NHS stated via Health Service Journal, “There is a growing concern that a (COVID-19) related inflammatory syndrome is emerging in children in the UK, or that there may be another unidentified, infectious pathogen associated with these cases.”
They added, “Abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms have been a common feature as has cardiac inflammation and this has been observed in children with confirmed PCR positive SARS-CoV-2 infection as well as children who are PCR negative. Serological evidence of possible preceding SARS-CoV-2 infection has also been observed.”
Then again, USA Today reported that while there are reports that mention about the possible link of this rare syndrome in children to coronavirus, Dr. James Gill, an honorary clinical lecturer at Warwick Medical School, stated that there is still no real proof that these rare cases were caused by COVID-19.
To learn more about this illness, the World Health Organization is currently collecting data about this seemingly COVID-19-related syndrome in children. Once they have all the details they need, they may be able to verify everything and released an official report about the new disease.
While little is known about this rare syndrome, doctors advised the parents to be observant and alert at all times especially when their kids are not feeling well. They also said that if they are worried about their children, then they should call a doctor or the NHS at once. In this way, medical professionals could address the complaint as soon as possible and assess the child’s condition.
