Luis Suárez was not happy when he found out he was not playing during Copa América Centenario’s decisive game between Uruguay and Venezuela on Thursday night, and he let everyone know.
On Friday, the 29-year-old forward made the headlines after a video of his reaction during the match’s half time went viral. According to sources, the FC Barcelona star had no idea he was staying on the bench during the second half of the game.
“The ‘O’ next to Luis Suarez’s name means he is OUT,” FOX Sports host Rob Stone wrote on Twitter. “Nobody on #Uruguay bothered to tell him. Classic. #URUvVen.”
The Guardian reported Suárez was seen warming up on the sidelines despite not being named as a substitute or in the starting eleven. He missed the first game of the tournament because he was reportedly injured.
“There is no situation. The situation is what I told you [on Wednesday]. The player is not ready to play,” said Uruguay’s coach, Óscar Tabárez. “This is an issue about numbers and doctors. Even if the player is upset, I’m not going to play a player who is not 100%. If he got upset, that is something I was not aware of. He didn’t tell me anything.”
Uruguay was eliminated from the championship when Mexico defeated Jamaica on Thursday night.
On Twitter, Suárez kept fans updated about his injury and expressed his desire to play during this year’s Copa América before the team flew up to the U.S.
“Thanks for the support! I’m recovering to be 100% with Uruguay,” he tweeted on May 23.
The following day, he shared photos of his physical therapy and revealed he was doing his best to recover.
“Working hard to be ready as soon as possible,” he wrote.
