The Indian police team investigating the suicide of the wife of a police officer has revealed disturbing details of the death. Investigators say the police officer might have witnessed the suicide on CCTV.
The civil police officer, identified as Raneez is believed to have watched his wife, Najila (27) hanging herself to death after killing their two children, a five-year-old son, Tipu Sultan, and a one-year-old daughter, Malala, through a secret camera installed at their home in Alappuzha, Kerala.
“We noticed that a CCTV camera installed by Ranees in the police quarters without the knowledge of Najila was connected to his mobile phone,” an investigating officer told Manorama.
Police said the hidden camera was placed in the hall of the quarters and connected to Ranees’ phone so that he could constantly observe Najla and the children.
He was arrested a day after the May 10 murder-suicide. Ranees was subsequently charged with harassment and abetment to suicide. He was suspended from duty after his remand.
The special investigation team also arrested Renees’s 24-year-old girlfriend, Shahana in connection with the murder-suicide. She was arrested on the charge of abetment of suicide.
According to the police report obtained by the Manorama, Shahana often threatened Najla, asking her to divorce Ranees so that she could marry him.
Shahana also threatened Najla that she would come to her home and stay with them as Ranees' wife.
“Even on the day Najla and the children died, Shahana had reached the police quarters and picked up a fight with Najla,” said an investigating officer.
Shahana, who was produced in court, was remanded.
A further probe is underway, police said.
In another incident, a 32-year-old mother of one allegedly hanged herself to death after her new husband, whom she got married to secretly, refused her request to move in with him.
The unidentified victim was found hanging dead from a ceiling fan inside her parents' home in Dera Bassi's Mubarakpur neighborhood on Monday, July 18.
A suicide note recovered from the scene blamed her male friend for her death.
The victim and the man, who has not been publicly identified, were in a relationship for the last six years, since the time she divorced her first husband for unknown reasons.
According to SI Kulwant Singh, the victim and the accused had reportedly married but were living separately to keep the relationship a secret.
The victim, who had been living at her parent’s house with her 8-year-old daughter, was repeatedly requesting her secret husband to let her move into the same property with him, reports said.
After her repeated efforts to convince him failed, the victim decided to take the extreme step, according to police.
The accused, a resident of Sundra village, was arrested and charged for abetment following a complaint by the victim's brother. He is now being held on police remand.
