Ydanis Rodríguez, the city of New York's transportation commissioner, met with Hugo Beras, executive director of the Dominican National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT), on Wednesday, Dec. 21, to discuss how to coordinate and set up procedures for inter-institutional cooperation in the areas of mobility, transit, transportation, and road safety, Diario Libre reported.
In accordance with a press statement, both officials decided to form collaborative working groups to coordinate initiatives for the benefit of citizens during the meeting.
Hugo Beras made an announcement at the meeting on the government's goal to modernize the mass passenger transportation industry through INTRANT, which is tasked with enforcing the rules of Law 63-17 on Mobility, Transport Terrestrial, Transit, and Road Safety as the transport governing body, said reports.
Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez explained that he came to the country to learn about the achievements in transit and share the improvements that have been implemented in New York City.
After announcing that seven new corridors will be operational in Greater Santo Domingo next year, in addition to the existing ones in Núñez de Cáceres, Churchill, and Charles de Gaulle avenues and two in the city of Santiago, the director of INTRANT went into detail about everything related to bus corridors to transform public passenger transport.
"President Luis Abinader gave us some precise guidelines to work for the benefit of citizens and our objective is to create a complete integrated transport system, taking as an example the development that New York City has had in the implementation of road improvements", Beras argued.
He stated that by the beginning of the year, school transportation would be available for bid and that it will be split into two modalities in which the State will offer electric buses and a subcontractor with unions and businesses that adhere to strict criteria and are focused on this service type.
According to the official, the "Safe Intersections" program, which calls for the intervention of 600 of the nation's intersections with the highest rate of traffic accidents, will be implemented by the INTRANT.
