Colt McCoy Trade: Is San Fran A Good Fit For Browns QB? [POLL]

After being selected by a struggling Cleveland Browns organization in the 3rd round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Colt McCoy was looked upon as someone who could re-energize a struggling franchise. In three seasons in a Browns uniform however, McCoy started 21 games, only posting a 6-15 record. Perhaps his on-field record coupled with the signing of veteran quarterback Jason Campbell presented the Cleveland organization with an opportunity to ship the QB who was never able to rejuvenate the city and its team.

According to CBSSports.com, McCoy is now a member of the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers, who in addition to McCoy will receive Cleveland's 6th round pick in exchange for the 5th and 7th round picks in this April's NFL draft. Having seen his fair share of struggles as a member of the Cleveland Browns, the 26-year-old McCoy has to wonder if his career as a starter, at least for the time being, is over.

While McCoy is headed to a loaded team with players including running back Frank Gore, tight end Vernon Davis, and a rising superstar in quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy will most likely be battling for the back-up role behind Kaepernick. In order to land the #2 job, McCoy will have to beat out Scott Tolzien, an undrafted quarterback out of Wisconsin who was picked up off waivers by the 49ers in September of 2011.

Even though this may not seem like a great situation for Colt McCoy when you talk about immediate playing time, the fact that he's going to a proven contender and a coach in Jim Harbaugh who knows how to develop quarterbacks, can only help him as a player. There is always the element of injury in the game of football so if McCoy is able to win the back-up role and Colin Kaepernick is hit with an injury, the 'Niners could instantly call on Colt McCoy to keep their season and title hopes afloat.
