The circumstances surrounding the death of a young inmate at Colorado State Penitentiary are being investigated. 23-year-old Gerardo Banda was brutally beaten by a fellow inmate, 35-year-old Glen Young.
The victim was given medical attention at the prison before being transported to a hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack.
A fight broke out in the Management Control Unit of the Colorado State Penitentiary in Fremont County, Colorado on Wednesday, August 4. During the brawl, Young was seen beating Banda for around 15 seconds, Denver Post reported. The situation was brought under control by the correctional officers.
Banda was seriously injured during the assault. He was first treated for his injuries at the prison. According to Fox21, the injured inmate was transported to St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City. From there he was airlifted to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs as his condition worsened. He eventually succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, August 5.
Colorado Department of Corrections has launched an investigation into the incident. The Department of Correction Inspector General will be coordinating with the district attorney’s office if there are any changes to the charges against Young based on the investigation.
In another incident where an inmate claimed the life of another, the assailant has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. 26-year-old Shane Goldsby was transferred to Airway Heights Corrections Center in Spokane County, Washington. He discovered that his cellmate was 70-year-old convicted pedophile Robert Munger who had raped his sister.
Goldsby had been arrested after being suspected of a stabbing. He engaged police in a lengthy car chase during which he crashed into a Washington State Patrol vehicle leaving a Trooper injured. He was eventually arrested, charged and sentenced for the incident. He had been transferred from a number of prisons due to violent incidents.
On June 2, 2020, he was transferred to Airway Heights Corrections Center where he discovered that his cellmate was Munger.
In December 2019, Munger had been sentenced for child rape, child molestation, and possession of child pornography. One of his victims was Goldsby’s younger sister who is still a minor.
Goldsby claims that after finding out about his cellmate he tried to get the officers to change his cell. The officers did not pay attention to him. He also claims that Munger kept trying to tell him gruesome details of the perverted acts he performed on children. Within hours of being transferred to Airway Heights Corrections Center, Goldsby attacked Munger from behind. He punched, kicked and stomped on the older man leaving him with fatal injuries.
On Tuesday, August 3 Goldsby was sentenced to over 24-years after pleading guilty to murder.
