Five policemen have been killed in an armed conflict with Colombian revolutionary group FARC in Cartagena del Chaira in the country's south. The confrontation occurred when a number of FARC militants ambushed a police truck that was transporting one of their members. Police chief Jose Baquero was revealed that the ambush was carried out by members of both FARC and Frente 15 and confirmed that a sixth officer had been wounded in the attack. The revolutionaries made off with the prisoner.
Meanwhile, two members of the Colombian military were murdere on Tuesday near the town of Saravena in the state of Arauca in the country's east during an armed conflict with the Ejercito de Liberacion Nacional (ELN). President Juan Manuel Santos called the attacks "vile murders" and assured that the army would continue to strengthen itself across the country. "I will begin by rejecting, repudating and condemning the vile murder of members of our police force produced as a result of this senseless war," said Santos.
Juan Manuel Santos has also increased the strenght of security forces in the capital of the state, Antioquia, supplementing the troops with 1000 more men. "The offensive is being maintained and strengthened. We are not going to lower our guard one single milimetre, we are not going to stop our offensive for one single instant to continue fighting and fighting all those criminals," said Santos emphatically. The Colombian government and membrs of FARC have been attempting to negotiate peace since the end of 2012.
