A 20-year-old college student was found dead in her dorm room after testing positive for COVID-19. The student was in quarantine at the time of her death.
Bethany Nesbitt, a third-year psychology major at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, tested positive for the deadly disease in late October. Her brother, Stephen Nesbitt, said his sister was asthmatic and started experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 on the week of Oct. 20.
Stephen said Bethany tested positive for the coronavirus on Oct. 22 but the results were not delivered due to a clerical error. On Oct. 26, she went to the emergency room following a drop in her oxygen saturation. The doctors said at that time that “she very likely had COVID-19 but it was not a severe case and she seemed to be recovering.”
The victim told her relatives on Oct. 28 that she had been fever-free for 24 hours and that her oxygen levels were normalizing, but she took another COVID-19 test the following day but her results came back positive only after her death.
In a statement, Kosciusko County Coroner Tony Ciriello said Bethany Nesbitt’s cause of death was pulmonary embolus, a blockage caused by blood clots in one of the pulmonary arteries in the lungs. According to Ciriello, COVID-19 was a contributing factor in her death because the coronavirus makes blood cells more likely to clump up and form clots.
Meanwhile, Bethany’s family revealed that the victim was the baby of the family. “She loved Jesus. She loved memes. And she loved her family and friends until the very end,” said Stephen.
The GoFundMe campaign for Bethany Nesbitt also reveals that she was “a selfless and loving friend, a source of constant encouragement to all those around her.” “She had a passion for helping others, especially children, and her sassy sense of humor and wonderful laugh put them at ease,” said her family.
On Tuesday, Bethany Nesbitt’s family also said they spoke out about her case not to spread fear but to encourage others to exercise caution and not take COVID-19 too lightly. “Please don’t assume that young people will not be impacted by the virus. Bethany was careful. She wore a mask. She socially distanced. We urge you to follow health officials’ protocols and precautions,” they said.
