A prestigious school group in Mexico has come under attack after publishing a homophobic article in its online magazine. "Mira," published by the private Catholic school group Miraflores, published an article titled "Preventing Homosexuality -- Yes You Can!" written by Ricardo Sada Fernández. Deeply offensive in tone, the article claims that sex has only one "divine" goal, procreation, and then goes on to expound various methods for preventing homosexuality in young children.

Miraflores' article has provoked outrage across Mexican social media. The prestigious school group has schools around the country including Mexico City, Cuernavaca and Monterrey, and was even attended by Mexican Presdient Enrique Peña Nieto's daughter Paulina. The article recommends ways to "stabilize the sexual identity of children"; recommends giving adequate examples to a child and also advising that if there is a "an appropriate masculine role model" absent, then another one should be found.

The Miraflores article gives seven different actions for ensuring homosexuality is suppressed in children. The "Mira" magazine went a step further by publishing an article title, ironically, "Marriage Equality, affirming that a marriage between a man and a woman is the only "real" marriage, while arguing that marriage between partners of the same sex is a fallacy faced by a society in a "cultural battle."

Mexican social media was in uproar following the publication of the inflammatory articles. Miraflores promptly took the articles down from their website, but also released a statement defending their publications. "It's true that the theme of homosexuality has diverse opinions. However, the articles published in Mira are not those of the school itself, but rather those of the authors who write them...We publish them if we consider that they could be of interest to our readers."

"It is worth analyzing diverse opinions, not just those that predominate in a given historical moment," the press release continued. "And finally, everyone decides what to think and believe."
