Mark Hamill is set to voice the evil doll Chucky in the “Child’s Play” remake. Earlier this week, the actor talked about how the Chucky in the upcoming film differs from its previous versions and shared how he felt intimidated by the role.
At the “Child’s Play” press conference, Hamill revealed that it was not the character itself that intimidated him the most but what the character represents. He also compared voicing Chucky to portraying Joker in “Batman: The Animated Series,” saying that he had never felt so intimidated in his career as a voice actor.
“I thought, when I auditioned for the Joker, there’s no way they’re going to cast this icon of virtue, Luke Skywalker, as the Joker,” he said. “Forget about it. So I had no performance anxiety because I knew they couldn’t hire me. It’s only because so many people have expectations of what he’s supposed to sound like,” he added.
According to Mark Hamill, he did not feel that kind of intimidation until it finally sunk in that he was actually doing Chucky. He also said that he’s anxious to see how people will react to his portrayal because the Chucky in the upcoming film is far from the Chucky that fans used to know.
The “Child’s Play” remake will feature an evil doll with new technological enhancements and with a fresh origin to its evil nature. Hamill’s Chucky is not possessed by a serial killer but is programmed to be evil. “It’s not the soul of a serial killer, but someone deliberately goes in and alters his operating system and takes off the safety measures,” he explained.
Unlike the previous versions of the evil doll, the upcoming Chucky will also be dark and intense yet humorous at the same time. He is no longer an amoral psychopath but just an AI adapting his behavior from the world he sees around him. This major change in the character, Hamill said, is a crucial element in the film and is what particularly makes voicing the role tricky for him.
The “Child’s Play” remake arrives three decades after the original film hit theaters and introduced the killer doll. Directed by Lars Klevberg, it will follow the same plot as the original but with a different Chucky.
