Following the release of text messages and transcripts made public by Attorney General Letitia James, the role of CNN anchor in his brother’s scandal is under the radar again.
Chris Cuomo had been asked by his employers to not ‘advise’ the former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo regarding the sexual abuse allegations. The documents released allegedly indicate that despite the warning, the anchor continued his involvement.
The host of “Cuomo Prime Time” and the younger brother of the shamed politician is now under review. CNN will be reviewing thousands of pages of transcripts and text messages related to Andrew’s case. It is alleged that Chris used his position and his connections to find out information on victims as well as to sway public opinion.
Text messages between Chris and Andrew’s top aide Melissa DeRosa revealed that the anchor advised the team on how to tackle the scandal. He sent text messages critiquing his older brother’s response in front of the press. He wrote what he thought would be a better response, New York Post revealed. These indicated that he helped strategize responses to the allegations against Andrew.
The document also revealed that DeRosa had asked Chris to make unscrupulous use of his source. She asked him to find out if more victims would be coming forward or if other members of the press would be reporting on the allegations.
Chris reportedly got in touch with Ronan Farrow while trying to keep his brother’s image clear. Farrow had won a Pulitzer Prize for exposing Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct. Chris tried to find out if he would be reporting on Andrew’s case.
While testifying to investigators, Chris claimed that a reporter getting in touch with another over any upcoming story was “business as usual.” He accepted that he had been asked by his brother to closely monitor media reporting on the allegations.
When Chris’s involvement was revealed in May leading to CNN issuing a warning. The anchor was not suspended but was asked to not advise Andrew anymore.
Addressing his viewers, Chris had spoken about how he had not been an advisor but a brother to Andrew following the allegations. He claimed that after the network informed him that his involvement was inappropriate, he had stopped talking to his brother’s aides.
While sharing her testimony during the investigation, DeRosa said that Chris had offered “unsolicited advice”. She dismissed any major advisory role that the younger brother played.
Months after Andrew stepped down from his office, his brother’s involvement continues to be looked into.
