Thor and Loki In Love?

Thor: The Dark World's release in China has undergone some comic controversy after Shanghai's Bona Insun International Theater Complex displayed a poster of Thor and Loki in an embrace that was more homoerotic than brotherly. As Gay Star News reports, the poster was a photoshopped image based on a poster of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) embracing Natalie Portman's character Dr. Jane Foster. A weibo (Chinese social media) user known only as bbqfish2012 created the image which was mistakenly used in the cinema.

Thor: The Dark World, unfortunately for some, does not actually involve a Loki - Thor love story. Loki and Thor do come together as allies to fight a new myserious dark force, but this alliance stays strictly platonic. Although we're sure there is plenty of slash fiction that might suggest otherwise. There are however a number of gay and lesbian characters in the Marvel Universe: while none of them have made their big-screen debut yet, with Marvel never-ending popularity, there are sure to be a couple of gay superheroes on the big screen soon. In the meantime, here are the Top 5 Gay Marvel Superheroes.

1. Northstar (Jean-Paul Beaubier) is the twin brother of Aurora. He is French-Canadian and develops superhuman mutant abilities to move and fly at superhuman speeds. He has been part of both the Alpha Flight and X-Men superhero teams. He came out in 1992, becoming the first openly gay comic book character. He married his partner, Kyle Jinadu, in Astonishing X-Men #51, published June 27, 2012

2. Wiccan (Billy Kaplan) one of the Young Avengers and he has magical powers similar to the Scarlet Witch. He is in an on-again, off-again relationship with Teddy Altman, the Hulkling. Interestingly, his costume is inspired by both the Scarlet Witch and Thor himself.

3. The Hulkling (Teddy Altman) Hulkling's character is patterned on the Hulk. He has shapeshifting abilities that go far beyond the ability to mimic the Hulk, and superhuman strength. He is featured in "The Young Avengers 2013" series.

4. Apollo. Apollo's powers include superhuman strength, flight, and near invulnerability. He married fellow The Authority member Midnighter and both adopted Jenny Quantum.

5. Ultimate Colossus. (Piotr Nikolaivitch Rasputin) While most versions of this all powerful X-Men character are straight, the Ultimate universe versio was revealed to be gay and almost had a fling with Northstar.
