Apple wasn't satisfied with just one spectacular media event, they are hosting two! Apple sent out a second round of invitations, however these polka-dotted invites were different. A follow-up event is scheduled for Sept. 11 at Beijing's World Trade Center instead of the Apple compound in Cupertino, California. To add to the secrecy the Sept. 11 event is directed specifically at Chinese publications and journalists. This marks the first time Apple has held a standalone event specifically for Chinese media.
Apple has expressed it desire for growth in China, viewing the country's emerging market as an area of mass potential growth. Apple now intends to make China, the world's most populous country, its No. 1 market. Apple's drive into China has been a main goal for the company, in 2011 when Tim Cook still served as Apple's COO, he expressed the Apple's desire to break into "a classic prepaid market," mainly China.
We have heard of the rumored release of not just one refreshed iPhone but two, and with the addition of the China-centric event, maybe it's true. Despite Apple's desire for success in China most citizens cannot afford the high price of the advanced technology. "One of our sources claims that Apple's iPhone prices remain too high for most mainland Chinese customers," iLounge editor-in-chief Jeremy Horwitz wrote in January. But now with the addition of a mid-range iPhone model, perhaps Apple has resolved China's economic hold. Apple's release of the rumored low-cost iPhone 5C will help execute Apple's desired growth. Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty concluded that the "iPhone 5C could increase Apple market share by 13 points in China."
While Apple's Senior Vice President, Phillip Schiller, has denied claims that the company is releasing a low-end phone stating, "Despite the popular of cheap smartphones, this will never be the future of Apple's products." The new purposed iPhone 5C is not a cheap smartphone but instead a mid-range alternative to the iPhone 5S. Currently "iPhone 5 hardware alone starts at $849 there, versus the iPhone 4 at $500, in a country where the average annual salary is around $3,000 per person," it is illogical to attempt to control the market with such a huge monetary disparity.
Therefore many experts claims that Apple has created the iPhone 5C to retail between $300 and $400. According to Huberty, Apple's market share in China could jump by 19.3% if Apple chooses to release its iPhone 5C on China Mobile for $400 off-contract, which would consequently make Apple the No. 1 smartphone seller in China.
It looks as though September is going to be a month to remember for Apple releases. New rumors also indicate that the company may unveil an upgraded Apple TV. CEO Tim Cook announced in May that Apple was working on a "grand vision" for television, meaning it's going to be a big refresh.
