China’s top diplomat has accused the U.S. of trying to start a new cold war between two of the world’s largest economies and driving the world into “chaos and division.”
Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during an interview that “today’s China is not the former Soviet Union” before saying that they have no intention of becoming the U.S.
“We have no intention of becoming another United States. China does not export ideology, and never interferes in other countries’ internal affairs,” he said.
The English translation of the interview shows how the counselor went on to discuss the U.S.-China relationship and the subjects that have had an impact on it recently, including the South China Sea dispute, Hong Kong issue and Chinese tech firm Huawei.
Several U.S. officials in the past have said that China wants to dominate the world and replace the U.S. as a global superpower. Similar sentiments have resulted because of recent speeches by popular politicians and public figures, including the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security advisor Robert O’Brien.
China, on the other hand, has accused the U.S. of trying to stop Beijing from its ascent in the world and has denied that it wants to overtake Washington.
“The root cause is that some American politicians who are biased against and hostile to China are using their power to smear China with fabrications and impede normal ties with China under various pretexts,” Wang said during the interview.
The increasing competition between Washington and Beijing has been discussed globally for the last few years. However, recent series of events starting from China’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic to trade war and accusations concerning the use of technology to compromise America’s security has only deepened the worsening relationship between the two nations.
