Eduardo Vargas was the unlikely hero for Chile as the hosts defeated a 10-men Peru squad 2-1 to advance to their first Copa America Final since 1987.
Vargas saved teammate Gary Medel who's own goal in the 60th minute leveled the score at 1-1 and silenced the packed house at Estadio Nacional Arena.
Thanks to Vargas, Chile is now one win away from their first ever Copa America title as they await the winner of Argentina and Paraguay on Tuesday.
Similar to their international friendly last year, the home country got some good luck in the early part of the game.
Carlos Zambrano was shown a straight red for having his studs up when he accidentally kicked Chilean midfielder Charles Aranguiz in the back in the 20th minute. Zambrano was ejected, and Peru was forced to play with a man disadvantage for the remaining 70 minutes of the match.
A little over 20 minutes later, Vargas capitalized on the man advantage thanks to some more good fortune. Alexis Sanchez sent in a cross that bounced off the back post and right to Vargas who found himself in the right place at the right time. Vargas easily tapped the ball into the open net and Chile lead 1-0.
Peru had opportunities, most noticeably in the 11th minute when Jefferson Farfan's shot bounced off the crossbar, but with only 10-men, it seemed unlikely that they would be able to overcome the goal deficit.
However, Peru finally caught lightning in a bottle in the 60th minute thanks to Medel. Luis Advincula sent in a dangerous cross to Guerrero, but the Peruvian striker was double-teamed. Thankfully for Peru, Medel leapt into the air and tried to clear the ball, but inside kicked it inside his own net, and the game was tied.
Peru's happiness did not last however as Vargas scored his second goal of the game, and easily the best goal of the tournament thus far.
Vargas finished off his brace with one of the most beautiful goals you'll ever see. Vargas not only scored a sensational strike from 30-yards outside the box with a ball that curved into the far post as it seemed to literally fall from the sky on it's way to the top left corner of the net.
