Jorge Sampaoli's Chile travels to the Colombian coastal city of Barranquilla on Friday, Oct. 11 to face a Colombian squad ranked second in South American qualifying and fifth overall by FIFA in what will likely be one of the premier matchups of this year's qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup. Chile is third place in South America with 24 points, and they've won their last four qualifiers in addition to coming quite close to taking down the world champions Spain three weeks ago. Viewers could be treated to a shootout on Friday afternoon, as both teams' offenses have been looking high-powered lately - despite the fact that Chile isn't known for its offensive prowess and doesn't have a single key scorer, as its leading scorer Matias Fernandez only has three goals in the qualifiers. Colombia (with 26 points) has scored in each of their last 11 home qualifiers, according to goal.com, and Chile has managed at least one goal in each of their last seven games, including against giants Brazil and Spain. Chile, however, have not been playing entirely stellar defense - they've conceded 21 goals to Colombia's nine. Sampaoli's squad will have to keep in check two Colombians in particular: Radamel Falcao (who has seven goals in this year's qualifiers) and Teofilo Gutierrez (who has three).
Colombia has not qualified for the finals since 1998, but their performance so far in the qualifiers has raised its fans' hopes and viewers' expectations. They're two points ahead of Chile and four ahead of both Ecuador and Uruguay, who also slug it out on Friday afternoon - and they're three back of the South American leader Argentina. They'll look to replicate their success on defense (with four blank sheets out of seven home games so far in these qualifiers) under the leadership of Mario Alberto Yepes, the 37-year-old captain. Coach Jose Pekerman might also choose to pair Radamel Falcao with striker Jackson Martinez up front instead of Falcao's partner Teofilo Gutierrez.
Colombia's two-striker formation has served them quite well throughout the qualifiers because of their tremendous depth at the position as well as the number of box-to-box midfielders they've had at the ready. Chile has stuck with a back four in their last two matches, but this afternoon they could also turn to a three-man defense to give them an advantage against the powerful Colombian strikers.
