The Chicago Bears head out to Green Bay on Monday night to play the historic rival Packers in an important game for both teams in the hotly disputed NFC North. The 5-2 Packers enjoy a slim lead over the 5-3 Detroit Lions for first place in the division, and a loss to the 4-3 Bears would even the two squads up in the standings. The Bears may enjoy the historic edge on the Packers in their 188 total meetings - Chicago has beaten them 92 of those times, lost 88 and tied six - but lately Green Bay has had the Bears' number. The Packers have taken the last six meetings between the two squads, including a playoff victory in January 2011 which Chicago fans still remember ruefully. The Pack have a shot to set back their rivals quite significantly in their quest for a playoff spot if they make their win streak seven deep. ESPN.com's Bears reporter Michael Wright wrote today that Monday night's game was the "measuring stick" for determining whether or not the Bears really have a shot at sticking around close enough to the Packers to eventually dethrone them when Jay Cutler and linebacker Lance Briggs come back from their injuries. Wright also said he was "not really confident about Chicago's chances", adding that "that has more to do with the team's struggling defense than Cutler's absence."
Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has thus far had a stellar year, completing 67.1 percent of his passes and throwing 15 touchdown passes. He's said he expects the Bears to blitz as per usual, even with linebacker Brian Urlacher having to pick up much of the pass-rushing slack with Briggs on the sideline. CSN Chicago notes that a lack of a serious pass rush has cost the Bears significantly in recent weeks, as they've dropped three of their past four games and failed to hold opponents to fewer than 21 points in any of them. "I don't know if it's desperation now," said defensive lineman Corey Wootton. "It's just something we need to do. Getting close is just not good enough. I don't think we're panicking. It's just something we have to get done." He added, "You've got to be relentless in your effort because you never know when you're going to get one."
