While Chelsea is expected to officially land Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa soon, the Barclays Premier League affiliate is preparing to part ways with Brazilian defender David Luiz this summer. The approaching transfer window is shaping up to be a busy one and even though coach Jose Mourinho and Blues officials hope to build up the clubs roster heading into next season, their 27-year-old defensive star is not expected to be at Stamford Bridge for the 2014-2015 campaign. Reportedly agreeing to a £30 million move to Camp Nou, Luiz is now set to begin another chapter in his career, something his current head coach didn't think would happen just last year.
“The team needs him and he has what it takes to be a really top, top defender in the world,” Mourinho said last season when asked about the international stars future. “He has to reach that stability and maturity. It is important for every player to know the principles of their play, to know what we do facing certain situations and for defenders to understand each other and complement each other. A team and a defensive player need stability. With the talent Luiz has I hope he can reach that.”
Luiz was rumored to be leaving Stamford Bridge last season and ultimately remained with the Premier League club but with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain highly interested in his services, it is expected that the former Benfica talent will depart England. A supreme skillset on the defensive side of the ball, Luiz remains one of the prime players at his position and it should come as no surprise that a top-level team like Barcelona is showing strong interest. If reports indicating that Luiz and Barca have agreed to terms, a move from England to Spain could happen in the coming days.
