NBA player Miles Bridges is facing three felony charges after he was accused of assaulting his partner in the presence of their two kids in June. The Charlotte Hornets forward was arrested after turning himself in and was slapped with domestic violence charges including two felony counts of child abuse. The 24-year-old player is out on bail on a $130,000 bond.
According to the NBA, District Attorney George Gascon and his office filed one felony count of injuring a child’s parent and two felony counts of child abuse based on the conditions of his alleged assault that were likely to cause great bodily injury or death. The couple reportedly got into a heated argument that led to a physical altercation on June 27 with the player leaving the area on the same day of the attack. He turned himself into authorities on June 29.
"Domestic violence creates physical, mental and emotional trauma that has a lasting impact on survivors," Gascon said.
Bridges’ partner, Mychelle Johnson posted several photos of her injuries on Instagram earlier this month along with a screenshot of a medical report from the hospital that outlined her injuries. The report indicated she sustained a concussion, nasal bone fracture, rib contusion as well as neck muscle strain and a number of bruises. Her post also included a video of their son who could be heard saying, “Daddy choked mommy.”
“Children who witness family violence are especially vulnerable and the impact on them is immeasurable,” Gascón pointed out.
Meanwhile, Bridges’ agent Rich Paul has not chimed in on the incident however, The Hornets have already released a brief statement to address the charges. “The Charlotte Hornets are aware of the situation involving Miles Bridges."
"We are in the process of gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time,” the statement read.
Being a restricted free agent, the 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward is expected to rake in the big bucks this summer following a breakout season. Prior to his arrest, the Hornets had made their intentions clear of re-signing him. His arraignment was set for Wednesday while the case remains under investigation.
