The Boston Celtics are expected to try and replicate their 2021-22 NBA Finals feat, much of which could be seen in the manpower additions they have done so far.
However, there could be a new obstacle over the horizon following reports that head coach Ime Udoka could be sanctioned for his alleged intimate relationship with a female member of the Celtics’ staff.
This is a violation of the team’s code of conduct, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported. As of this writing, no decision has been made on the potential length of Udoka’s suspension.
But in a most recent update, the Celtics coach have reportedly been suspended for the entire 2022-23 NBA season by Boston Celtics management.
Udoka has been in a relationship with actress Nia Long since 2010. Together, they share a son.
The case places a dark shroud on the Celtics' 2022-23 NBA campaign. After their impressive performance last season, pundits thought that Boston had found their coach for the present and the future.
The Celtics made the 2022 NBA Finals but fell to the Golden State Warriors.
Assuming that Udoka would be suspended for the entire 2022-23 NBA season, the likely person to fill in the void would be Joe Mazulla who would serve on an interim basis.
Udoka was hired by Boston after spending eight years as an assistant under Gregg Popovich with the Spurs before brief stints with the 76ers and Nets. He was considered one of the brightest coaching stars in the league, the Post reported.
The Udoka case is the latest issue to come out following the sanctions meted on Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury owner Robert Sarver.
Sarver was banned for one year from games and meted a $10 million fine that most felt were not enough. The 60-year-old is reportedly now busy trying to find takers for the ballclubs, a move lauded by NBA commissioner Adam Silver and several NBA stars.
