The Catholic Church is under scrutiny once again now that reports suggesting the Church has been covering up sexual abuse cases since the 1950's have leaked. Another issue plaguing the church suggests that the Cardinal of New York, Timothy Dolan hid $57 million. The accusation says Dolan did this in order to claim bankruptcy while apart of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee when it was sue by a sexual abuse victim.

The Sunday Morning Herald is reporting that the Catholic Church "had extensive knowledge dating back to the 1950s" of child sexual abuse by Father Denis McAlinden. It is alleged that the priest abused boys and girls as young as four or five.

One of McAlinden's victims claims he was abused by the priest between the ages of five and nine. It is alleged that when the boy told another priest about the abuse, the boy was given a penance to absolve him of the sin of being abused.

Like many of the priests accused of sexually abusing children McAlinden was moved to another diocese. In 1976 the priest was sent to the Geraldton diocese in Australia.
Letters sent back and forth between two top Church officials suggest that they knew the priest had "pedophilic tendencies" but did not think they were serious. Various victims have come forward since the 1970s claiming abuse by Father McAlinden. Despite the fact that an arrest warrant was issued for him McAlinden was never brought up on charges. The Sunday Morning Herald says the last update on McAlinden came in 2005 saying he was in Australia dying of cancer.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan is a recognizable name in the Catholic Church. It was even rumored he could have been nominated for the Papacy during the last election. It is alleged that while the Cardinal of New York was the Archbishop of Milwaukee he hid money in order to pay off victims of sexual abuse.
Despite the fact that the Milwaukee archdiocese filed for bankruptcy Dolan is accused of hiding over $50 million.
According to UPI the $57 million was put into a Trust by Dolan with the Church's permission in order to pay victims of sexual abuse to go away.
In a letter to the Vatican Dolan says he will need some of the funds from the Trust to care for cemeteries that need maintenance. The priest added to that statement saying,
"By transferring these assets to the Trust, I foresee an improved protection of these funds from any legal claim and liability."
Cardinal Dolan told the media these allegations are nothing new and have no merit or credibility.
