A 72-year-old great-grandmother was brutally beaten by a carjacker who then died in a crash moments later when he fled, a report said.
Shirlene Hernandez, from San Antonio, Texas, was walking into a Shell gas station to grab a Diet Coke, Tuesday morning, April 18, when a man attacked her and slammed her in the face with the car door, in a tussle to take her keys.
Three men tried to help her but they were unable to tackle the attacker, who stole the elderly woman’s vehicle and drove off, Hernandez said.
The unidentified suspect was later found dead in the stolen totaled car on a nearby highway, the station reported, roughed her up, according to WBRC.
"There’s a lot of people who would say what goes around comes around, karma. I did not think that; the only thing I got (was) really sad because he had died," Hernandez said.
"Now granted, he had hurt me, but the Lord saw fit to take him out of his misery."
Hernandez is still recovering from the severe bruises on her face and is now left without a vehicle to get to work.
"I just don't want to quit working, and so I've got to somehow get another car. And that takes money and stuff, so I've got to figure out what to do," she said.
Hernandez's granddaughter Helen Garcia and local residents have set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds to buy her a replacement car.
"The man who took her car hit her with the door, badly bruising her face. The man wrecked her car and totaled it, leaving her without a way to get to work or appointments. Any donation helps get her back on her feet and is greatly appreciated," the GoFundMe statement said.
The fundraiser initially had a target of $5,000 but by Tuesday morning, donations had exceeded $28,000.
Hernandez said she was grateful for the people that had tried to help her at the gas station and added: "I just hope that if this situation happens to anybody else, that somebody will step forward, leap forward, run forward, whatever, and help the person that it’s happening to."
