Hartford police say suspect in car chased, shot 12-year-old after car hit by snowball FOX 61 / YouTube

A 12-year-old boy in Connecticut, was shot multiple times after he and a friend threw a snowball at a passing car, prompting the car's occupants to retaliate by firing at the children.

The incident occurred on the evening of Jan. 22, in Hartford, Connecticut, where the two children were playing in the snow, NBC News reported.

After one of their snowballs struck a passing car, the vehicle reportedly circled the block and returned to confront them. The occupants "fired rounds at the children," injuring the 12-year-old, while the 11-year-old friend escaped unharmed, Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert said at a news conference.

The injured boy was rushed to Connecticut Children's Medical Center and treated for multiple non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Police identified the area's surveillance footage and are actively investigating to track down the car and its occupants. No arrests have been made yet, and officials have urged anyone with information to come forward.

The violent escalation has left the local community shocked, as such actions were seen as extreme and unthinkable over a playful act.
