Argentinian Berenice Bejo, who made her big debut in Best Picture "The Artist", has taken the crown for Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film "The Past."
The French native played a distressed wife, juggling a new fiance and an ex, who was asking her estranged husband to return home from Iran in order to finalize their divorce, France24 reported.
The film, directed by Asghar Farhadi, was being seriously considered for the Palme D'Or, but was ousted by lesbian drama "Blue Is The Warmest Color."
"I said the phrase I always hated -- 'I'm sorry, I didn't expect this at all'!" Bejo said as she became emotional before the crowd. "It's amazing, I worked like a mad person for this role."
The honor is awarded after deliberation from a panel of nine judges, which was headed by Steven Spielberg.
