Canadians are poking fun at the Liberal Party's loosened membership rules by registering their pets to vote in the upcoming leadership election.

The Liberal Party, facing a leadership race after Justin Trudeau's resignation announcement on Monday, recently implemented rule changes to make membership registration more accessible, including removing fees, CTV News reported.

These relaxed rules, intended to broaden participation, have led to reports of fake profiles, including registrations under pet names and even addresses like the Chinese Embassy.

Past controversies surrounding foreign interference in local nomination races have already put the party's voter registration process under scrutiny.

As the March 9 leadership vote approaches, social media is buzzing with posts about Canadians registering their pets as members, turning the issue into a satirical spectacle.

"I want to share that my dog will be voting for Canada's next Prime Minister. Isn't that great? Her vote, by the way, is totally for sale," communications strategist Dan Robertson of Pathos Strategy wrote on X.

Concerns about both mischief and foreign interference have added pressure on the Liberals to ensure a secure and credible process.

The Liberal Party plans to remove ineligible or fake registrations well before the vote.
