The candidates running for US presidentship are in full swing, campaigning to the best of their abilities, aiming to dethrone Donald Trump and the one topping the list is Bernie Sanders, who has slowly but swiftly risen through the ranks. But the question is, will he be able to oust Trump and become America’s next president?
Well, for starters, there is no denying the fact that Sanders has built a populist movement and changed the course of the Democratic Party to the left on the minimum wage, marijuana legalization, environmental regulation, and drugs eradication. And while even till January, Joe Biden was appearing to be the winner, while Sanders trailed behind him, the latter is finally gaining traction.
"Instead of asking if Sanders is unelectable, ask another question: What if Sanders is actually the MOST electable Democrat?" wrote political journalist Pete Hamby in Vanity Fair. "In the age of Trump, hyper-partisanship, institutional distrust, and social media, Sanders could be examined as a candidate almost custom-built to go head-to-head with Trump this year."
And to an extent, Hamby is right- Bernie is a political celebrity, who is pretty honest and frank about his self-described democratic socialist views, something that is increasing his likeability factor- not his views but how he is not hiding them.
But just his democratic views won’t be enough to win him the elections as in the Democratic Party only 15% of Democrats identify as very liberal, 32% describe themselves as liberal, 38% as moderate and 14% as conservative. Also, as per the recent Gallup tracking poll of the American electorate, just 27% of Americans identify as Democrats thus retaining America as a center-right nation
So, it is quite obvious that for any candidate (including Bernie Sanders) to win, they need to win votes beyond their base to win the presidency and while Sanders planning on connecting with working-class voters, alienated by the establishment, they are yet stand up in his favor.
And even though Sanders is a democratic socialist in a center-right country, in the list of “anything is possible” his win doesn’t seem that impossible. After all, Trump was a rather unpopular candidate when he was running for presidentship and yet he won. There is still a lot of time before November comes knocking and a lot can happen in the time in between.
