Activision has announced this morning that "Call of Duty: Ghosts" has shipped a billion dollars' worth of the game into retailers around the world. This victory lap coincides on the day the company is set to announce its second quarter results. Curiously, however, Activision decided against disclosing how much money was generated by sales of the game in the first 24-hours of launch. Instead, this figure merely reveals how much stock was sold to retailers ahead of the games launch. It doesn't garnish any insight as to how many units were sold and how much Activision brought in for "Call of Duty: Ghosts."
"Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation," said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick "And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year. Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it's launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular." While "Call of Duty: Ghosts" was the most preordered game at GameStop this year the sales numbers have still not been revealed it's still unknown if the game did as well as the shipped products.
The billion shipped to retailers is most likely Activision's way to snatch back the record from "Grand Theft Auto V," which sold $1 billion in retail over three days. Activision has yet to release a comparable figure for "CoD: Ghosts" but it will be interesting to see how the title did against the competition and previous "Call of Duty" titles. Do you think "Call of Duty" Ghosts" sold more than "Grand Theft Auto V?"
