Rumors circulating on the internet claimed the release of "Call of Duty" could be a sequel to 2019's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare."
Fans also speculated that the plot of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" would revolve around a drug cartel fight. As of press time, Activision had yet to corroborate the reports.
Activision will release "Call of Duty: Vanguard," a World War II-themed game, in November for the 2021 installment of the franchise.
Speculations claimed that Activision is planning to release "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" next year.
IGN, citing a tweet from industry insider Tom Henderson, said the developers called the plan as "Project Cortez."
"It's expected to be a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019," the tweet reads.
"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" is rumored to be in production for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, according to Comic Book.
Sources said the potential release next year will "feature a campaign with US special forces battling in a covert war against Columbian drug gangs."
If Activision's video game "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" is the sequel to "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare," it will be released next year. The 2019 release, as IGN said, is also the reboot of the franchise's "Modern Warfare" series.
The 16th iteration of the "CoD" franchise was developed by Infinity Ward and released by Activision in 2019.
The video game's plot revolves around the invasion of a fictional country called Urzikstan by Russian soldiers. It tells the narrative of a CIA officer named Alex as well as British SAS personnel who join up with Urzikstan rebels to fight the Russians.
2022 appears to be a promising year for "CoD" aficionados, particularly those who enjoy the "Modern Warfare" series. Fans of the brand and gamers alike, however, will not have to wait long for something fresh from "CoD," as a new game is planned to release this year.
The upcoming video game "Call of Duty: Vanguard" is part of the popular franchise. Playstation said developers would release the game on November 5. The next game will be the newest addition to the franchise's World War II-themed titles.
From August 27 to 29, users who owned select "CoD" titles may play a preview of "Vanguard."
