In response to President Donald Trump's executive orders targeting illegal immigration, the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting undocumented students and their families.
With federal immigration authorities now permitted to make arrests at schools, reversing a long-standing policy that designated them as off-limits, many Sacramento-area families fear sending their children to school.
To address these concerns, SCUSD officials met with nonprofit and community leaders, emphasizing their Safe Haven policy and ensuring parents that school campuses remain a safe space for all students, Fox40 reported.
"We got to turn up the heat so we can melt this ICE," SCUSD officials declared, vowing to resist federal immigration enforcement on school grounds.
"When parents feel unsafe sending their kids to school campuses, the result of that is a negative impact on all students because that school loses funding, and that lack of funding impacts every child," David Schaap of the Department of Education explained. "This is not just an issue for immigrant families. This is an issue for all California families."
Jasjit Sing, President of the SCUSD Board of Education, made it clear that "immigration enforcement is not allowed on our campuses, absent a valid court order." The board reaffirmed its commitment to providing equal access to education for all students, regardless of immigration status.
Board member Michael Benjamin echoed this stance, saying, "I am ready to stay in lockstep with everybody who's here in front of my schools to make sure all kids get the right to learn."
SCUSD officials also outlined protocols for handling immigration agents on campus. If an ICE officer arrives at a school, they must present a valid warrant, which will then be reviewed by the district's superintendent and legal staff before any action is taken.
Community leaders advised students and families to be aware of their rights, including the right to remain silent when approached by immigration officers. Officials also urged families to update emergency contact information in case of detentions.
