An assistant principal at a California middle school killed himself on campus before students and staff arrived on Monday morning, March 14, officials said.
Moises Plascencia was found dead inside a bathroom at the Kraemer Middle School in Placentia, Southern California, early Monday, school officials said in a statement.
Reports said investigators recovered a firearm that was found lying next to the victim's lifeless body.
Authorities said Plascencia fatally shot himself, adding that no one witnessed his death.
"The incident took place in a private staff area and fellow staff members and students were not present nor was the occurrence witnessed by anyone," Principal Michael Young said.
Jim Elsasser, Superintendent of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District said the incident has devastated the entire campus.
"Moises was so much more than a respected assistant principal. He was a father, husband, brother, and friend to so many in our school district community. His passing, and the manner in which it occurred, has left us devastated, confused, and heartbroken; however, we ask that you please respect his family’s privacy during this incredibly difficult time," Elsasser said in a statement.
"While we may never make sense of or understand why this occurred, we do know that turning to each other during this time for support is essential."
"As the superintendent, I am struggling to find adequate words to convey the shock and heartbreak we are all feeling right now," he said. "Yet I know that we will find a way to come together as a community, care for one another, and get through this trauma together."
Principal Young said students were sent home early following Plascencia’s suicide.
“Words will never be able to express our true sorrow regarding this loss," Young said. "While we may never make sense of nor understand why this occurred, please know how deeply Mr. Plascencia cares for your students, their education, and all of Kraemer Middle School."
"School will resume tomorrow with our regular schedule. The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District’s (PYLUSD) team of highly qualified mental health professionals will be on campus to serve and support students, staff, and families," the principal said.
The exact motive behind the apparent suicide is unclear at this time. The death is being investigated.
