The brother of "El Mencho," also known as the most wanted cartel boss in Mexico, was arrested by the Army in Guadalajara on Tuesday, as authorities continue to focus on dismantling the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and their drug empire.
Antonio Oseguera, also known by the alias "El Tony Montana," was arrested in a suburb of Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco in Mexico, where the Jalisco New Generation Cartel is known to operate, according to the Associated Press.
Oseguera, whose brother is notorious drug lord Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, has been involved in various illegal activities, including drug trafficking, money laundering, weapons possession, and “coordinating violent attacks against rival groups,” The Guardian reported.
He is currently sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for his links to the Jalisco drug cartel, though it is unclear if the country has requested that he be extradited to face charges.
El Tony Montana, whose name is apparently derived from the main character of the 1983 Al Pacino movie “Scarface,” is the third person in El Mencho’s family to be arrested: his wife was also arrested in November 2021, while his son Reuben was given to the custody of the U.S. in 2020.
El Mencho has had a $10 million bounty on his head for any information that could lead to his arrest, but attempts to arrest him has been violently pushed back on by members of the Jalisco gang, who has remained powerful despite many of their “capos” being arrested by authorities.
“Is it going to dismantle the Jalisco cartel? I doubt it,” Alejandro Hope, a security expert in Mexico City, said. “After so many captures of so many capos, we should be pretty skeptical about its effect.”
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is one of the most powerful, well-armed, and violent drug cartels currently working in Mexico. They have a history of attacking and retaliating against Mexican authorities in a violent and disturbing manner.
One of their members in 2015 shot down a military helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade, and in 2020, the cartel attempted to assassinate Mexico City’s police chief, leaving three people dead.
Many people have worried that this arrest could trigger a significant amount of violence from the cartel, with Hope saying that they “wouldn’t be surprised if there was some attempt to sabotage the arrest.”
