The Denver Broncos have fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett less than one year into his first season with the team. In 15 games with Denver Hackett amassed a 4-11 record. Senior assistant coach Jerry Rosburg will take over as interim head coach for Denver’s final two games.
The announcement comes after the Broncos were embarrassed on Christmas Day, losing to the Los Angeles Rams 51-14. Previously the Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach, Hackett was hired last offseason to help the Broncos reach the playoffs with help from quarterback Russell Wilson who was acquired via trade. The two have failed to impress in Denver as the club ranks last in points per game at 15.5 while Wilson is having the worst year of his career with 12 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and a 82.6 passer rating.
Hackett never seemed ready to be a head coach in the NFL. He gave up play-calling responsibilities in the first half of the season amidst offensive struggles and was heavily criticized for his game management decisions. Denver’s front office brought in Rosburg to assist Hackett with clock management.
In a statement from Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner, Hackett’s dismal, “was made now out of respect for everyone involved and allows us to immediately begin the search for a new head coach.”
Since 2015 Denver has had four head coaches all of whom have failed to reach the playoffs.
