A British college student who was found dead and hanging in her hostel room on Feb. 16, 2019 was determined to have cocaine, Ecstasy and Xanax in her body at the time of her death. Inquest proceedings at the Suffolk County Coroner’s Court on Tuesday laid down autopsy results of 17-year-dol Megan Younger-Watson, who allegedly told her friends she was sexually assaulted at a house party she attended the night before her death.
The teen was out with friends for a night of partying at the Grinning Rat pub. After the bar closed at midnight, she joined the group at a flat party.
According to a report from Ipswich Star, during the inquest, the girl’s friends said that their group had been drinking and taking drugs all night to celebrate with Younger-Watson because she was allowed to continue living at the Christchurch House youth hostel after facing eviction orders.
On their way home, Younger-Watson told friends she was raped at the party and that she felt “distraught” and “didn’t know what she was doing”.
Fellow hostel residents described the hostel night concierge carrying the girl upstairs twice in an intoxicated state. She was last seen on CCTV at around 8:00 a.m. entering her female lover's room where an argument started. She later went back to her room by herself and was left alone since.
Friends lodged a 999 call at around 10:00 a.m. after getting no response from her. Responding paramedics and police had to break down the door but despite their best efforts were not able to revive the teen.
Police were able to later identify Younger-Watson’s alleged attacker however they declined to press charges. Although Suffolk Police Det. Inspector Daniel Connick acknowledged it was “apparent” that Younger-Watson had been “too intoxicated” to consent to sex, autopsy reports reveal she had relatively low levels of alcohol in her body, The Sun wrote.
Younger-Watson had a history of anxiety and depression and was diagnosed with PTSD after an abusive relationship in her early teens. She then moved into Christchurch House for more independence while seeking help for anxiety and depression. The troubled teen also had several incidents of self-harm and attempted overdoses in the past.
A few days before her death, the hostel management told the girl she may be evicted from Christchurch House due to ongoing concerns about her mental wellbeing, engagement with GPs and medication.
The victim’s mother brought up concerns regarding how nobody in charge was alerted to her daughter’s mental state. Although the concierge tried to ensure the girl’s safety, they failed to inform the hostel’s duty manager at the time of the incident.
The coroner pointed out two “missed opportunities” where advice was not sought from NHS 111 about how to deal with the teen’s condition. The teen’s mother said she felt more could have been done to protect her daughter on the night she died.
