Brian Banks continues to move forward with his life after a rape conviction against the 27-year-old was dismissed last May. While the exoneration of a false charge was the first step in rebuilding his life and recreating his image, Banks has reportedly been given a chance in the NFL.
According to ESPN, Brian Banks has signed on with the Atlanta Falcons. Banks initially committed to USC and former head coach Pete Carroll but because of the charges he was forced to spend five years in prison for a crime he did not commit. In order to land a roster spot once the 2013-2014 NFL season begins, Banks must make the final cut at 53 players once mini-camps close.
"Besides getting my life and my freedom back, this is the biggest accomplishment of my life. But it is also just the beginning," Banks told reporters on a conference call according to NBC Sports. While this is the first team to officially sign Banks, it's not the first time the linebacker has attempted to break into the league.
Banks worked out with three NFL teams last year, including the Seattle Seahawks who ironically enough are now coached by Pete Carroll, the same coach who recruited him at USC. While a spot in the NFL did not work out, Banks was able to join the roster of the Las Vegas Locos, a team from the United Football League.
With the announcement that Banks is now inked with an Atlanta Falcons team that fell just shy of reaching the Super Bowl last season, the linebacker is full of elation posting on his Twitter page that he "feels good this morning."
I think it's fair to say that everyone can feel good about this story. Way to go Brian, well deserved.
