A 42-year-old beauty technician is being ridiculed as 'Pinocchio' by trolls after a skin graft to correct a deviated septum has adversely doubled the size of her nose.
Laudiane Fernandes has had hemangioma since she was a child, which are non-cancerous growths that induce inflammation of the blood vessels, Daily Mail reported. Extreme nosebleeds and seizures began when she was just five years old as a result of the disorder.
Fernandes, from Alagoas, Brazil, continued to spend time in and out of the hospital due to problems with her nose, eyes, and scalp – until she was diagnosed with cavernous haemangioma aged 16.
She said that she had severe nosebleeds that would result in a pool of blood. To treat the inflammation and stop the nosebleed that was frequent, the medics tried to perform a cauterization - a device that aims to burn off and remove part of the body to stop bleeding, but the procedure failed to treat the problem.
"Between the ages of nine and sixteen years old, I was in and out of hospital as medics struggled to try to diagnose my condition. I was constantly bleeding almost every day and as the seizures began to get worse, I started fearing for my life,” Fernandes said.
The beautician continued: "As my nosebleeds worsened to the point where I couldn't even go a day without profusely bleeding, I spent the majority of my time in hospital corridors where they could monitor my condition.
"Due to this, doctors decided that the best course of action would be to perform surgery on my nose where they would cut into it and remove a clump of blood vessels."
She had eight surgeries to fix the anomaly and in one of the surgeries, a part of her nose was lost due to infection. Doctors then used a part of her right cheek to reconstruct her nose and enable her to breathe properly.
"After five hours, the process was complete and although I felt happy that my nose was finally whole again, I was sad about my appearance and all the scars I had been left with.”
Despite the fact that these remarks can be hurtful, Fernandes chooses to reflect on the good by being grateful for her life. She is grateful that she has overcome the days that horrified her with unstoppable bleeding, and she is glad that she is alive to narrate her story of struggle.
Fernandes is not bogged down by the mean comments and trolls, and neither is she ashamed or is overpowered by inferiority complex because of her appearance. She follows her dreams and is a successful Digital Influencer.
