FIFA will award $35 million to the champions of the 2014 World Cup, and each of the 32 teams competing are guaranteed $8 million dollars for their trip to Brazil. The figures were revealed on Thursday following a meeting of FIFA's executive committee as part of the group's $576 million dollar fund. The announcement was made by FIFA president Joseph Blatter, who spoke at a press conference in Costa do Sauipe, the seaside town where the final pools for the World Cup will be decided next week.
FIFA's World Cup fun includes payments to all the clubs in the world as well as insurance to cover players' salaries should they be injured during the tournament. In the 2010 World Cup, Spain won $30 million dollars of the $348 million given out to competition entrants. FIFA awards the money to the 32 individual football federations from each country, each of which will receive an additional $1.5 million dollars to finance World Cup preparation. The World Cup begins in Brazil next June.
Of coures, individual countries may choose to offer an extra incentive to their teams. Indeed, the German football federation has offered each one of its players $407,000 dollars to win the championship.
