World Cup fans are gearing up to go to Brazil, but many of them might have some concerns for their safety given Rio de Janeiro's reputation. Well, a new video that has appeared online today which will not ease these fears much at all. A Brazilian TV station has aired a video of a woman being mugged while talking about insecurity at the main train station in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The shocking video has a very dark irony that is not lost on the TV presenter.
The video of the interview and mugging were recorded by TV Globo and were transmitted online by internet GI. In the video, the woman is complaining about the lack of police presence at the station when a young man runs past her and tries to snatch a necklace from around her neck. The young thief is then seen fleeing the scene across a busy street while the reporter tries in vain to chase him down. The thief however ran away empty handed as he dropped the necklace in his mad rush.
With roughly 21.8 or 27.1 homicides per 100,000 residents, muggings, robberies, kidnapping and gang violence, Brazil is one of the most dangerous countries in the world in terms of criminal violence. According to the United Nations, More than 500,000 people have been killed by firearms in Brazil between 1979 and 2003. Dilma Rousseff's government has been working hard to improve the crime levels in the lead up to the World Cup, however, there are still pervading fears of insecurity.
