In an unusual case, a fifty-two-year-old man who was announced brain dead gifted a new hope of life to three people, by donating liver and both kidneys to them on Wednesday, Oct. 6. An organ recipient himself, the patient had gone through a successful transplant of the liver.
Sometime after his surgery, he experienced an episode of weakness in the right side of the body with slurring of speech. On further examination, the MRI test results suggested a midline shift with intracranial hemorrhage, as stated by the doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) in Delhi, India. His condition was unrelated to the transplant surgery he had undergone.
The hospital authority revealed that the patient was kept on ventilator support since his condition declined. The doctors eventually declared the patient brain dead.
The deceased patient’s family gave their consent to donate the patient’s organs. Both kidneys, as well as the liver, were allotted by National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). Another patient in FMRI, who was on the list of recipients, received one of the organs. Two other recipients underwent the transplant at other private hospitals in Delhi, as reported by India.com.
A 60-year-old female at FMRI received one of the donor's kidneys. The second kidney was given to a 51-year-old female. The liver was allotted to a 54-year-old male, who was admitted to different private hospitals in Delhi.
Anil Mandhani, the Executive Director of Urology and Kidney Transplant at FMRI, said in a statement that he appreciates the deceased donor, as well as his family members. He pointed out that the donor and his family understood the importance of the act of donating one’s organs. Mandhani encouraged others to consider organ donation as it has immense life-saving potential, as reported by News18.
The doctor also added that the patients who got the kidneys had no possibilities to acquire genuine living donors. He also mentioned that these patients were fighting for life and were on dialysis for a long time. The donor and his family’s gallant act of donating organs gave the ailing a new shot at life. He encouraged everyone to come forward and register themselves and family members for organ donation.
