Canelo Alvarez knows that he will face a formidable foe this Saturday in Callum Smith. At stake will be the WBA, WBC super-middleweight titles although the British boxer may have other things in mind.
Smith will be the sixth boxer that Alvarez will face. The Mexican has won over all of them and now most are calling him the destroyer of British fighters. Among the Brit boxers he has faced in the past include Ryan Rhodes, Amir Khan, Rocky Fielding, Liam Smith and Matthew Hatton.
Regardless, the 30-year-old boxer shrugs off that tag and instead stated that he feels privileged having good boxers from Britain.
"No, no, no, nothing like that," Canelo said. "As a matter of fact, I feel privileged that I've fought several English boxers. They're great boxers - strong, smart and once again, another one against Callum Smith I have the opportunity to do it."
Against Smith, Alvarez knows he has his hands full. He faces someone who has yet to lose a boxing match. Aside from that, Callum could be out for revenge. Alvarez defeated his older brother, Liam, in 2016 with the WBO world title at the 154-pound catchweight on the line.
While that could be a good side story or motivation, Alvarez is ready for anything. He knows that even though they are brothers, they have different fighting styles.
"They're totally different, totally different," Canelo said. "I'm preparing 100 percent for Callum Smith. I know that he comes with some sense of revenge for his brother."
It has been more than a year since the two boxers fought. Alvarez faced Sergey Kovalev in November, winning via knockout in the 11th round. On the other end, Smith clashed with John Ryder on the same month last year and won via unanimous decision.
Being a four-division champion, Alvarez could have a slight edge. However, this will be his first fight since bolting Golden Boy Promotions. For the Mexican Brawler, that adds more pressure although it could also serve as motivation that he and his camp can handle his business without any help.
“Feeling challenged. Doing things that make me exert myself in training. And keep the mentality of making history. That’s what I like, and that’s why I keep taking the big challenges,” Alvarez said via DAZN.
