WBO Middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade knows that he will eventually be among the top boxers in his division. Unfortunately, he has been made to wait to get to the big fights. Like most fighters in his division, the 32-year-old is aching to get a chance to face Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. But to do so, he needs to take care of the little things.
The little things pertain to fights against Billy Joe Saunders and Jermall Charlo. Being undefeated so far, "Boo Boo" knows he has what it takes to take care of business. With Alvarez busy with his legal issues and Golovkin busy facing other fighters, the logical fight for him is to face either Saunders or Charlo. And from the way he sounded in an interview with Boxingscene, Andrade is getting impatient.
“On my end, what I would like to do is be a three-divisional world champion by going up to 168 pounds and fight Billy Joe Saunders,” Andrade said. “It was something that was supposed to happen. It’s something that is going to help with my career as far locking in Canelo, Charlo, GGG, if that’s still possible. I’m looking to do something like that.”
Andrade was the mandatory challenger to face Saunders for the WBO middleweight title back in 2018. Unfortunately, Saunders tested positive for performance-enhanced drugs. Saunders would vacate the title but ended up winning the WBO super middleweight title. For his part, Andrade would go on to win the middleweight title after dismantling Walter Kautondokwa. Since then, he has made three successful title defenses. His last fight was against Luke Keeler last January in Miami, ESPN reported.
Despite his rampage, Andrade wants to face Saunders so badly. For him, it is an unfinished business. Unfortunately, nothing close to that has happened.
If that is unavailable, Charlo is someone he fancies. He believes he has what it takes to pummel a 30-year-old pug. Andrade is willing to face him either for the WBC middleweight belt or the WBC junior middleweight title.
"I’ll fight either Charlo -- the WBC middleweight champion (Jermall) – I’ll whoop his ass, or if the little one (WBC junior middleweight titlist Jermell Charlo) wants to come on up, he can come get it too. Those are the fights I’m looking for," Andrade said.
Andrade will not settle for anything less. He wants to face the best but he knows he has to be patient and go through the process. But at his age, hopefully, he gets that wish to face the top names in his division soon.
“I’m gonna fight whoever I have to fight because I love what I do but alright guys -- how long are we gonna keep doing this for until I get a big fight? It gets boring for the people. It gets boring for me,” Andrade said.
