Following heightened security concerns and awareness stemming from the Boston Marathon bombings Monday, eagle-eyed passengers aboard a plane bound for Boston spotted something suspicious. After arriving in Boston, US Airways Flight 1716 was searched at Logan Airport after passengers heard a "popping noise" emanating from carry-on luggage.
The plane had arrived just before 10 a.m. Eastern Time after departing from Philadelphia earlier Tuesday morning. In addition to the suspicious noises, smoke was reported coming from a bag. It was not reported whether the smoke was coming from the same bag as the noises. A K-9 unit was dispatched and several items were retrieved from the plane and are currently being investigated.
Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio said that a piece of unchecked luggage is officially under investigation. He said he believed there were no ties between the suspicious luggage aboard the plane at Logan Airport and the bombing of the 2013 Boston Marathon on Monday.
