Former New England Patriot, Joe Andruzzi, was at the finish line of the Boston Marathon with his wife, Jen, when two explosions occurred. The former offensive lineman sprang into action and carried a runner away from the blast site to safety. An image was captured of Andruzzi carrying a female runner after the explosions while flanked by two crying, obviously distressed teens.
Andruzzi and his wife were at the finish line congratulating and greeting runners as they completed the Boston Marathon, his charitable foundation (UP)Beat Cancer had 13 participants running in the marathon and was also hosting an event on Boylston Street.
After his own battle with cancer in 2007, the Andruzzi family established the charitable foundation is 2008; they work to tackle cancers impact "by providing financial assistance for patients and their families as well as funding pediatric brain cancer research."
Andruzzi released a statement regarding the explosions and the horrific aftermath that occurred at the Boston Marathon, "Marathon Monday should be about uplifting stories, personal challenges and fundraising milestones, but today's bombings irrevocably changed that," the statement said.
He has been described as a humble man and his statement continued to prove that.
"While I appreciate the interest in hearing our perspective on today's horrific events, the spotlight should remain firmly on the countless individuals -- first responders, medics, EMTs, runners who crossed the finish line and kept on running straight to give blood, and the countless civilians who did whatever they could to save lives. They were the true heroes. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this senseless tragedy."
The impact and tragedy that struck the Boston Marathon was unfortunately not Andruzzi's first run in with tragedy. His three brothers, Billy Jr., Jimmy, and Marc, are all New York City firefighters and responded to the September 11 terrorist attacks at World Trade Center.
Andruzzi took to his personal twitter to clarify his family's safety and to specifically thank first responders that were on the scene.
