Around 4 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday, the John Joseph Moakley Federal Courthouse in Boston, Mass. was evacuated. The U.S. Marshals Service reported that amid earlier confusion regarding the existence of a marathon bombing suspect in custody, a bomb threat was allegedly received by authorities.
When the now-retracted news broke regarding the bombing suspect, hundreds of people flocked to the Federal courthouse in South Boston to see firsthand what was going on. Soonafter, a "Code Red" was issued for the Moakley Courthouse, and journalists and bystanders were quickly whisked outside, away from the building.
Officials from the Department of Homeland Security are reportedly combing the area surrounding the evacuated courthouse, and Nikki Credic-Barrett, spokeswoman for the U.S. Marshals, confirmed the security sweep.
A crib from an adjacent day care was seen being removed from the building, but no further details of that particular facet of the evacuation are available. CBS News is reporting that staff is just now being allowed inside the building once again. A press conference on the day's events is expected at 5 p.m. Eastern.
