Border authorities apprehended 21 migrants "entering the U.S. illegally via a storm drain" in El Paso, El Paso Sector Chief Anthony Scott Good announced on his account on X.
"The dark, hazardous tunnel, filled with unknown dangers, could have cost them their lives," Good wrote.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13. According to Border Report, agents observed that a storm drain cover had been left open. When they went in to investigate, they caught the migrants leaving the drain.
El Paso Station Border Patrol agents worked with the El Paso Police Department to apprehend the migrants, who were from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic.
Customs and Border Protection's latest data on migration and enforcement at the U.S.-Mexico border shows that CBP apprehended 58,038 people in August. That is slightly up from July (56,399) but still the second-lowest number of migrant apprehensions since September 2020.
Border Patrol's fiscal year 2024 migrant apprehensions are on track to be 21% fewer than last year's, according to the human rights advocacy organization WOLA.
