Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt's prison sentence has been reduced from six to five years, according to the BBC. The Bollywood star was released on bail in 2007 after appealing the sentence he received for allegedly purchasing weapons from the individuals that bombed Mumbai in 1993. Sanjay Dutt said he needed the weapons to protect his family during the turmoil. In addition to the Bollywood actor, 188 people were indicted for their participation in the bombings.

Sanjay Dutt said he would report to prison as required instead of seeking a pardon for the offense. A prolific Bollywood actor, Sanjay Dutt is best known for playing a gangster in "Munna Bhai M.B.B.S," a 2003 comedy movie, which won the National Award for film.

Although the Bollywood star, whose prison term begins in four weeks' time, said he would not seek clemency, the chairman of India's Press Council, Markandey Katju, said he will apply for Sanjay Dutt's pardon in the actor's stead. During the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, those for the lower house of Indian parliament, Dutt announced he would seek office on the Samajwadi Party's ticket. But, following the Supreme Court's motion to continue to seek his conviction on the arms possession charges, he bowed out of the race.

His sister, Priya Dutt, is currently a member of India's parliament, representing north-central Mumbai.

Sanjay Dutt also dabbled in sports management. In January 2012, the Bollywood star helped launch the Super Fight League, India's first mixed-martial-arts league.

In the four weeks until he returns to incarceration, Sanjay Dutt said he hopes to finish as many film projects as he can. He is in the process of filming "Ungli" as well as a number of other works-in-progress. His imprisonment will likely hurt India's film industry as one of their most popular stalwarts will be unavailable.

The Bollywood actor maintains that he did not know about the bomb plot when he asked for the weapons. He said he was being threatened during the riots leading up to the bombing.
