A woman's lifeless body was discovered inside a trash can in the backyard of a California home, leading to the arrest of a man believed to be her friend.

The investigation started Tuesday afternoon when police found the 38-year-old woman's body in a residence in a quiet Maple Avenue neighborhood in Costa Mesa, California. Authorities swiftly responded and began searching the area and crime scene for evidence and potential suspect.

The unnamed victim's identity remains undisclosed pending family notification. When officials asked nearby residents, most were shocked by the crime, describing the area as safe and devoid of violence.

"Never a problem, never had any type of violence or anything like that, any disturbance," Sherri, a neighbor, told the Los Angeles Times.

Police later confirmed to have a suspect, which they believe was also a friend of the victim, according to the outlet. The man was arrested at his home in Glendale soon after.

"The victim's friend was identified as a suspect and located in Glendale. Costa Mesa detectives traveled to Glendale and arrested the suspect," a police report read.

Details surrounding the motive and circumstances of the victim's death are still unclear. Costa Mesa police and the Glendale Police Department are working together to gather more information and evidence.
