The bodies of four California family members who were abducted together earlier this week were discovered on Wednesday in a rural area of the state, according to authorities.
Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke said “our worst fears have been confirmed” when a farm worker in the Northern California county found the four bodies which included an 8-month-old girl, reports said.
Jesus Manuel Salgado, the man suspected of the kidnapping, has been arrested. Although no charges have been filed against Salgado at the moment, the authorities will be working to build a case against him, said Warnke.
During a press conference on Wednesday night, Warnke said, “There are no words right now to describe the anger I feel and the senselessness of this incident.”
“I said it earlier: There’s a special place in hell for this guy.”
Aroohi Dheri, the 8-month-old infant girl, her parents Jasdeep Singh, 36, and Jasleen Kaur, 27, and uncle Amandeep Singh, 39, were all kidnapped on Monday around 1 p.m. from their place of business in the city of Merced.
The family was reported missing after a response from the California fire officials to a 2020 Dodge Ram truck on fire in Winton that was registered to Amandeep Singh. Neither the police nor relatives could reach him.
Around 5:30 p.m. local time, a farm worker who had discovered the bodies while doing his job duties called the sheriff's office. Warnke said that the bodies were found relatively close to one another.
He further stated that there is no known motivation for the murder and kidnapping.
The Department of Justice will be processing the crime scene.
“I’m just livid inside because this was completely, totally senseless,” he added. “We have a whole family wiped out and for what? We don’t know yet.”
According to authorities Salgado, 48, was detained after the affected family's ATM card was used at a nearby bank in Atwater where he tried to kill himself before getting arrested.
Warnke has confirmed the department speaking to the suspect but no further information has been provided on the matter. Further investigations are still ongoing.
